Bio

Steph received her B.S. degree in Cell and Developmental Biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Deciding to continue her studies, she originally remained at UCSB to pursue her M.A. degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology but switched over to the Ph.D. Program due to her love for Ciona regeneration!

As an undergraduate student, she initially focused on pre-medical requirements but decided to pursue a career in research after falling in love with research while working as an Undergraduate Researcher beginning her sophomore year.  She worked in both Dr. Susan Mazer and Dr. Dzwokai Ma's laboratories. Her honors thesis focused on Set1-family histone H3 lysine 4 methyltransferases and their potential function outside of the nucleus, which earned her a distinction within the major. She also volunteered during the entirety of her Sophomore year for the wonderful nurses in the Neurology Unit at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

As a graduate student, she devoted the majority of her time to research, teaching various biology laboratories such as MCDB 103L: Cell Biology Laboratory, and her mentorship positions (both graduate and undergraduate). Her graduate work focused on identifying the role of T-Type calcium channels during neural development.

The Graduate Biology Mentorship Association is an amazing program and I am so grateful to be a part of it. Thankfully, my senior year I had many friends in the graduate program at UCSB and it was immensely helpful for me when deciding my classes/future.
